  1. Essay 3 due April 13th:  the third and final essay is on the topic: 'Paradigm Shifts in Science, Technology and Human Society over the period 2000-2050'.  Obviously, the topic requires that you predict the major changes that will occur in our ways of thinking about science and technology and the consequential major changes in human society.  It is expected that you will carefully describe the reasons why you have selected specific paradigms shifts and how you think they will lead to consequential changes in human society.  Some of you will perhaps argue that there will be a constellation of many paradigm shifts while others may argue that there will be just a few dominant new paradigms.   Some of you may wish to consider and predict how memetic evolution will play a role in determining paradigm shifts in society.

In class, we have considered past paradigm shifts.  In these last three weeks of lectures, we will learn about current and emerging areas of science and technology that have the potential to create paradigm shifts over the period 2000-2050.  These will include the science and technologies of

energy supply and distribution - you may wish to check out the highly informative 'The Oil Age is Over' web page at http://www.lifeaftertheoilcrash.net/ .  There are many current and useful web links from this site.
